The Research Environment: The labs provide an intellectually stimulating environment. They provide a mix of the institutional wisdom of a large and long standing enterprise and the energy of a start up. TCS was one of the earliest companies to start a lab dedicated to software and process research. Our labs continually interact with projects worldwide and the various domains TCS operates in, to understand problems, take on challenging assignments and shape solutions.

Work happens in both core and multi disciplinary areas. There is cross pollination between labs and scope for role diversity. The Best Of Two Worlds: While primary research in blue sky areas is encouraged, there are mechanisms for creation of assets and monetization of research. There are entrepreneurship programs as well. Thus our researchers work with a passion in their areas of interest and also have the satisfaction of seeing this translate as solutions to problems in the real world. Our research projects allow enough test ground to deliver functional results of truly disruptive technologies.

Connect to the Ecosystem: Being in a happening place within the software industry does not cut off researchers from academia and other research institutions. In fact, TCS has created a network that links up the labs to the innovation ecosystem. The TCS Co Innovation Network anchors at TCS Innovation labs and connects to entities such as academic institutions, start up companies, venture funds, strategic alliance partners and multi-lateral organizations.

TCS conducts and participates in events that are fora for an invigorating exchange of ideas:

• Seminars, technology meets with scientists and academic researchers
• Customer facing events such as:
  - The TCS Innovation Fora: These area hosted in America and Europe to  provide an opportunity for key TCS clients to interact with an eclectic mix of technology experts, premier venture capital funds and their select start-ups, other select TCS’ clients, academic partners, TCS’ R&D and management.
  - TCS Innovation Days: Held at venues close to TCS’ high value clients, these provide an opportunity to expose customer technologists (CTOs) to TCS’ research through TCS’ senior R&D management and partners.

Learning and Growth: Operating in a rapidly changing environment TCS understands, and in fact emphasizes, a continual upgrade of skills and learning. Some examples of learning opportunities, other than what is provided by the lab environment:

We have external experts to give us research perspectives as well as an internal advisory board with senior associates whose achievements and knowledge have distinguished them.

TCS labs have around 450 scientists and researchers. Some of them have won global recognition in their fields of research. Many have been with TCS for many years. They have found the environment – both in terms of facilities and the intellectual freedom – continually stimulating. They have attracted younger scientists from various disciplines whom they have mentored and encouraged.
