The objective of Telecom, Media and Entertainment lab is to research and build artifacts in the field of video analytics using IP cameras with emphasis on Digital Surveillance techniques. The lab also builds and provides a test bed for innovative services for IPTV solutions.

Digital Surveillance based on Intelligent Video Analytics, IPTV

With increasing threats from terrorism common vandalism and theft, the need for a stronger video surveillance system is being felt across various venues as airports,and malls and industries such as  retail, and manufacturing. Traditional surveillance systems have been around for a long time. These systems predominantly contain CCTV cameras installed at main locations across the premise with security personnel monitoring the video wall for any suspicious activities. The main limitations of these systems include large storage space, difficulty to retrieve the store content after a security incident has  occurred and the dependency of the system  on the effectiveness of the security personnel manning the stations.

With the advent of IP based Digital Surveillance Systems (DSS), surveillance has become more effective compared to traditional systems. This has become possible because of the capabilities provided by intelligent video analytics which is at the heart of DSS. The key capabilities provided by the intelligent video analytics include Object – identification, classification and tracking, motion detection, multi scale tracking.  DSS is getting extended to applications other than surveillance such as baggage handling,traffic monitoring in transort industry or inventory management ,people counting in retail industry.
